Why is the Blue Lagoon Actually Blue? A Water Scientist’s Perspective

If you’ve just landed at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and are heading toward the Blue Lagoon, you’re about to witness one of Iceland’s most famous sights. But as a specialist in Iceland's unique geothermal and water systems, I often get asked the same question by my private transfer guests: “Is the water dyed, or is it natural?”

The answer is a fascinating mix of geology and physics.

It’s All About the Silica

The water in the Blue Lagoon is a byproduct of the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant. It’s a unique mixture of 70% seawater and 30% freshwater, heated to a perfect 38°C (100°F) by the magma deep beneath the Reykjanes Peninsula.

However, the secret to that milky-blue glow is Silica (SiO2).

Deep underground, the high-pressure, high-temperature water dissolves the surrounding volcanic rock, soaking up minerals. When that water reaches the surface and cools slightly, the silica molecules begin to "clump" together.

The Science of "Rayleigh Scattering"

These tiny silica clusters are exactly the right size to interact with sunlight. While the water absorbs the long-wavelength colors of the spectrum (like red and yellow), the silica molecules scatter the short-wavelength blue light back to your eyes.

This is the same physical phenomenon—Rayleigh Scattering—that makes the sky look blue! On a bright, sunny day, the lagoon will appear a vibrant, electric blue. On a cloudy Icelandic afternoon, it takes on a more "milky" or white appearance because there is less direct blue light to reflect.

Beyond the Beauty: Healing Waters

As a water specialist, I also point out to my guests that this water is "self-cleansing." The mineral content is so high that bacteria cannot thrive in it, and the silica itself is world-renowned for its skin-healing properties.

Experience Iceland with an Expert

When you book a private transfer from KEF or a customized shore excursion with Iceland Transfer and Excursion, you aren't just getting a ride. You’re getting a deep dive into the science that makes our island a geological wonder.

From the "1,000-year-old" glacial water we drink to the boiling physics of the Golden Circle, I make sure your journey is as educational as it is comfortable.
